What works in Sierra Leone

From the Western Area to the east, on one map.

N-Ways covers the whole country on one map. Here’s what you get when you open it in Sierra Leone.

  • Search by name or Plus Code

Places, streets and businesses in all five provinces. Sierra Leone has no postcodes, so search by the name of the place or the street, or type a Plus Code to find any spot.

  • Turn-by-turn, in English

Spoken directions, lane arrows and road signs, with the province you’re in shown on the map, like “Western Area · Sierra Leone”.

  • Okada, keke and taxi fares

What a ride should cost in leones, from the government’s fares: one stage by okada or keke, and per-seat fares for shared taxis and poda-podas.

  • Fuel in leones

Tell N-Ways your car once and every trip shows its litres and what they cost at the national pump price, Le40 a litre of petrol since 8 September 2026.

  • The Freetown okada ban

The police ban commercial okadas from Freetown’s Central Business District. Okada routes don’t cut through it, and N-Ways suggests driving or the bus instead.

  • Help after a crash

N-Ways shows the numbers to call: 117 for the National Emergency Medical Service and 900 for the police.

Lungi and the city centre

Across the estuary by water taxi, around the centre by car.

Freetown sits across the Sierra Leone River from Lungi and its airport: about three hours by road through Masiaka and Port Loko, or about 45 minutes by water taxi. Choose Boat in Directions and N-Ways plans the way to the terminal, the crossing and the way on.

  • Water taxis: SeaBird and Sea Coach Express, from Aberdeen to Lungi, timed to the flights. About US$50 for an adult, one way. No timetable is published, so times are estimates.
  • Take the water taxis, not wooden canoes or pirogues, and expect delays when the sea is rough.
  • The CBD okada ban, in force since 1 February 2025, covers about 35 streets, from Kissy Road and Fourah Bay Road to Pademba Road and Wallace-Johnson Street. N-Ways notes it hasn’t been confirmed since 2025, and lets you route through if you choose.
