The three borders

Seme–Kraké (Nigeria → Benin)

The Sèmè-Kraké joint border post opened on 23 October 2018: both countries' officers work in the same place. The UN's logistics profile lists it as open 24 hours, every day; neither government publishes hours. The approach from Mile 2 has many checkpoints.

Hillacondji–Sanvee-Condji (Benin → Togo)

A joint post was built here and handed over in 2022, but we found no confirmation that it runs jointly, so expect to stop on each side. Benin scans passports and fingerprints here on entry and exit. The Benin side is listed as open 24 hours by the UN's logistics profile.

Lomé-Kodjoviakopé–Aflao (Togo → Ghana)

Separate national posts, at the western edge of Lomé. The Daily Graphic reports that Aflao closes to vehicles at 10 pm; no official hours are published, so plan to arrive well before. Transit cargo uses the Noépé–Akanu joint post instead.

Election days: Benin and Togo close their land borders on election days (Benin did on 10–12 January 2026). Check the news before you set off.

Documents to bring

For you

  • A passport or an ECOWAS Travel Certificate. The Nigeria Immigration Service issues the certificate for travel within ECOWAS; it is valid for two years and renewable. ECOWAS citizens can stay up to 90 days without a visa.
  • Nigeria's ECOWAS biometric ID card (launched 28 November 2025) is meant to replace the passport within ECOWAS, but we found no confirmation that Benin, Togo and Ghana accept it at land borders yet. Carry your passport too.
  • A yellow fever vaccination card. Benin, Togo and Ghana ask every traveller aged 9 months or more; Nigeria asks on your way back.

For the car

  • Your driving licence. Benin's customs ask for an international one, according to the UN's logistics profile.
  • The vehicle's registration papers.
  • An ECOWAS Brown Card (see below).
  • A temporary entry paper for the car from customs in each country. Benin gives a laissez-passer at the border, valid 30 days and renewable up to 90. In Ghana, a car from abroad can apply to the DVLA for a permit to stay up to 90 days. Fees aren't published: pay only at an official counter and keep the receipt.

Last checked: 12 October 2026.

The ECOWAS Brown Card

The Brown Card is ECOWAS's motor insurance scheme: third-party cover that is valid in every member country, so someone hurt in an accident with your car in Benin, Togo or Ghana can be paid. National bureaux in each country issue the cards and handle claims.

  • Before you leave, ask your Nigerian motor insurer for the Brown Card certificate, and carry it with your vehicle papers.
  • In Nigeria, the National Bureau of the scheme is at NIA House, 42 Saka Tinubu Street, Victoria Island, Lagos.
  • In Ghana, claims and questions go to the Ghana National Bureau (contacts on our rights page).

The time change

Nigeria and Benin are on West Africa Time, UTC+1. Togo and Ghana are on GMT, UTC+0. None of them changes the clock in summer. So at Hillacondji, going west, clocks go back one hour; coming home, they go forward. N-Way shows your arrival time on the clock of where you're going, with its zone, like “13:28 GMT”.

Money and fuel

  • Nigeria: naira. The Central Bank doesn't allow street trading of foreign currency: use a licensed bureau de change.
  • Benin and Togo: the West African CFA franc (F CFA), the same money in both. The central bank (BCEAO) publishes no list of licensed changers: use a bank, or a bureau that shows its licence number, and ask for a receipt.
  • Ghana: the cedi, the only legal tender. Buying or selling currency with unlicensed dealers is unlawful.
